I'm In THIRD gear
| The Porsche 959 is one of those cars that speaks to your soul. I never,
ever thought I'd drive one, but this dream came true this January. I hope you don't think I put these photos to show off. I just love to share these experiences with everyone. Look: I don't own the car, but the way that the wonderful owner made me feel... well, if I'm ever fortunate enough to own one, I'd let all my friends take it out for a spin. I'm really very lucky to have some wonderful friends. I was expecting to get driven around by the wonderful owner, but he simply gave me the keys (with my wife Lindsay already in the car) and said "be back to eat at 1:30". It was noon. The Autostrade (a practically speed limit-free highway) was 5 minutes away... Well, what the hell would YOU do? As we cruised towards the Autostrade entrance, every single male head turned. Lindsay had no idea what some cars could do, but she certainly understood within 30 seconds of 1st gear driving. The car was quite forgiving for 450bhp at such low speeds, but I still managed to stall the car. Twice. We picked up the toll ticket at the entrance and away we went. In truth, I had no idea how fast I was accelerating until I saw Lindsay's head smack her headrest each time I changed gears. I made a dash for the outside left lane and switched to 3rd gear, then 4th about 3 seconds later. We were doing 240+. It took us less than 15 seconds. Holy shit. A warp signature could be seen from behind us. Trucks blurred by the right side like stainless steel pylons. I then asked Lindsay to take a photo of the dash while I was in 3rd. That photo is above. We did the 6 kilometres between toll exits in about 2 minutes. The brake discs were brand new and complained a bit, with a blazing buzzer in the car. So we slowed down and found a nice place to take the stationary photos you see above. Someone said that "It's never as good as the first time", but my first time driving sucked eggs compared to this. If you see one of these on the streets somewhere, "borrow" it for a bit of a ride. But make sure you return it. |
