"The greatest driver of the past, the present and the future" - Ferdinand Porsche

He won everything that could have been won at the time: Mille Miglia, Vanderbilt Cup, Monaco, Italy, France, Targa Florio, motorcycle races, Bianchis and Bugattis on the same day, speed records, Tunisia, even Le Mans. The list is long and complete.

Any top collector would appreciate how difficult it is to find anything personal of Nuvolari. Indeed, it is forbidden to sell original items of Nuvolari's in Italy, where he remains a national treasure. The museum in his home of Mantova is a destination for all racing aficionados.

Tazio Nuvolari documented race used helmet and goggles from the 1934 Grand Prix Suisse.

G.P. Suisse . August 26, 1934
Berna/Bremgartenwald . 509.60 km (7.28 x 70 laps)
Classified: Maserati 8CM 3000

There is little that needs to be said about this historic item.

This 1934 season opened with a new formula for Grand Prix cars: a 750Kg weight limit was issued to stop the dangerous escalation of the engine power. Besides, the German car makers (the Mercedes-Benz and the newborn Auto Union) made their entrance and shortly their control was overwhelming. Nuvolari set up his own team with not very competitive cars, so the season was really unfavourable for him. On April 22nd, at the Circuito "Bordino" in Alessandria he had what was to be the most serious accident of his entire career. A little more than a month later, however, he stoically started the Avusrennen still on crutches, with his left leg in a cast. He arrived 5th.

He run from a circuit to another, with many withdrawls (9 out of 23 races) and quite modest performances. Almost at the end of the season, things went better and he won in Modena and Naples. He drove up to seven cars: Bugatti 59, Maserati 8CM, Maserati 6C34, Alfa Romeo (private, of course) 8C 2300 Monza, 6C 2300 B Pescara and 8C 2600 Monza.

    Tazio Nuvolari signed telegramme

It is extremely rare to find anything signed by Nuvolari. This is a telegram sent and signed by Nuvolari on 17 May 1934, from Alessandria, Italy to Carrozzeria Menarini, a car and truck maker in Bologna, discussing (what else?) cars. At the time of this telegram Nuvolari was still in a cast, so this was written when he was gearing up for his return to racing.

TEXT OF TELEGRAM (in Italian):

Facendo seguito alla mia di ieri favorite prender nota delle modifiche da apportare al mio camion in corso di lavorazione, come da prospetti che vi allego alla presente.

Non dimenticate che il telone deve coprire le sponde sia di fianco che posteriormente fino al piano del camion, questo allo scopo ch'io nel caso di voler usufruire il camion senza telone, no vi siano iscrizioni.

Sperando che questa mia vi giunga in tempo per eseguire quanto espostovi, colgo l'occasione per salutarvi distintamente.

    Jody Scheckter - 1979 F1 World Champion.

    Alan Jones - 1980 F1 World Champion.

The future Williams Champion used this helmet for at least most of the 1978 season, when helmets were not as available to drivers as they are now.

Keijo "Keke" Rosberg - 1982 F1 World Champion.

Used helmet from the 1981 season. This helmet was also signed by Keke at Imola, 2000.

Funny true story: I was with Keke to get this signed at the McLaren VIP area (he is Mika Hakkinen's manager) and he was puffing when I pulled it out of the bag. He looked at it, puffed his ubiquitous cigarette, swore a bit, and called out "Mika!" Quietly, Mika Hakkinen, defending World Champion, walked out of the trailer and looked quizzically at his friend. "Mika, how many f**king helmets do you get in a season?" Mika simply shrugged and smiled, as this was a comedically typical Keke rant. "You guys... I wore this helmet the whole f**king season [puff from cigarette] and you babies wear a different one every day! Shit."

Mika looked at me, smirked, shrugged his shoulders and walked back in to see Erja. I looked at another McLaren guy and laughed.
